Your first time in a Gurdwara?

What do I wear?

Anything modest — long trousers or a long skirt, and shoulders covered. You do not need Punjabi clothes. Everyone covers their head inside, and scarves are available at the door if you have not brought one. No Short dresses or shorts, please.

What do I do when I arrive?

Leave your shoes on the racks by the entrance and wash your hands. Then walk into the main hall, bow before Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji if you wish, and sit wherever you like on the floor. Nobody will mind if you would rather just sit at the back and watch.

Do I have to take part?

No. You are welcome to sit quietly for as long or as short a time as you like, and to leave whenever you need to. There is no collection taken, and nobody will ask you anything.

What is Langar?

Langar is a free community meal, cooked and served by volunteers and eaten sitting together on the floor. It is served to everyone who comes, without exception and without charge. You are welcome to eat, and you are welcome to help.

Can I bring my children?

Yes. Children are welcome everywhere in the Gurdwara, and there is no expectation that they stay quiet or still.
